Help with algae in fish tank?!?

I have a 29 gallon tank and I have three goldfish and a tropical living in it. There are no live plants. I have a QuietFlow 30 filter which seems to be working nicely. My water is bright green and I don’t know why. I set it up last Christmas and about a month ago I began having this problem. There isn’t algae growing on the walls, it’s just the water. I tried doing 25% water changes every week but it never helped. The other day I had friends coming over so I chaged 75% of the water and it was back to bright green in less than two days. What am I doing wrong!? I can’t even see to the back of the tank.

If it’s free floating algae in the water, then the tank is getting too much light.

Mix that with the high nutrient levels from the messy goldfish, and warm water, and you get fantastic conditions for growing algae.

Shade the tank from excess natural light, turn off the tank lights (the fish don’t need them and you don’t have live plants) and keep up the water changes. Do that and the water will gradually clear up over a couple of weeks.

I have a couple of tanks that go green like that at certain times of the year when the sun is at the right angle to shine on them. I have to put up a little cardboard shade to keep the sun off for a few months. Reducing the light is they ONLY way I have found to control it properly.
