For this painting of 1873, Monet had his wife Camille and an unidentified neighbor pose in the garden of his rented house at Argenteuil, near Paris. In the enigmatic way in which the figures interact, this work comes close to Manet’s contemporaneous paintings.

She doesn’t seem very happy, and the dress doesn’t really help. you see the woman in the background is wearing a light blue dress and picking flowers, whereas the woman on the bench is wearing a black and gray dress and seems to be sad. Perhaps she is on her way to a funeral or someones grave and stopped to have a rest (i’m just guessing that because both her and the gentleman are in black and the flowers could be for the deceased). I also think that the woman in the background gives it a sense of realism, it’s not just a couple by a park bench. I’m curious as to what is behind the bushes the woman in blue is in front of; it appears to be a building of some sort, but i can’t really tell. hmm….
