How can I start gardening in my small patio garden (10×2 feet)?

I know NOTHING about gardening. I grew up in high rise crowded apartments in crowded and dirty urban areas and was never familiar with plants or gardening. Now, it is the first time I am living in a condo, which has a small patio garden (about 10×2 feet). I am interested to do some gardening (mostly thinking of herbs, tomatoes and alike), but have no clue what to do. I just have cleaned it and pulled out the weeds. Could someone guide me to a website/book such as “gardening for dummies” , or give me some hints here what to do next…like do I need to buy soil? how much, where, what type and so on….Thanks a lot folks!

Welcome to gardening!! It’s such fun and totally addictive. While there are literally millions of books out there on gardening, in my opinion the web is an even better resource for getting started.
The easiest way to start is to learn a bit about the various basics…for instance, the most important things to consider when starting your first garden are: light, soil, air/pollution, desired effect. You said you have a small patio area–is it enclosed/walled? If so, this will affect air circulation and could mean less light gets to the plants. In order to determine if your little patch of land is “full sun”, “partial sun” or shade, you should know how many hours of sunlight it gets per day. This is harder to determine in the winter, of course, since in the summer a full sun spot would get at least 6 hours of sun per day. A partial sun spot would get 3-4 hours of sun per day. Another thing to consider is whether the spot gets morning or afternoon sun, if it’s not an all day sunny spot–afternoon sun is much hotter and more intense than morning sun, and can scorch some more delicate plants. If you determine that your garden is actually in the shade, then you will have to grow your herbs and tomatoes in containers elsewhere (like in the house, or window boxes) since they require full sun.

Next up is your “Zone”. This is really easy to determine, just google “garden zone lookup” and you will find a bunch of maps that tell you all sorts of info like your Zone number (numbers 1-10 basically, with 10 being the hottest tropical zones and 1 being, like, the Arctic); the maps also give a general temperature range for your zone, and often tell you the dates of the first and last frosts–important when thinking of growing annuals like tomatoes and most herbs.
Now on to soil; there are very inexpensive little soil test kits that will tell you the pH of your existing soil. They’re about $5-$10 usually, and will help you understand whether you need to “amend” the soil with any extra nutrients or elements to change the pH for optimal plant growth. Most plants prefer a fairly neutral soil with a pH around 6.5 to 7. Do a little reading on this subject, as well, to fully understand what I’m talking about. It does make a difference! If you wish to add soil because your pH is screwy and you don’t want to mess around with lime or whatever amendments, then make sure to use garden soil, not potting soil. This is available very cheaply at places like Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc., as well as Wal Marts with a garden center, and of course, garden stores.

Another thing to think about as you plan out your first garden is how much time you have to spend on the project. If you want to grow tomatoes, for instance, and have good conditions for them, pay attention to the type of plants you buy–indeterminate tomato plants will grow very tall/large, and will need some light pruning as well as support (tomato cage) to grow properly. Determinate tomatoes are a much better choice for limited space like you have–you would probably have the best luck with a “patio tomato” bush since they are small, don’t need cages, and are very very easy to grow! As for herbs, most of them are very easy to care for, depending on your zone. They basically all just need a lot of sun, and good drainage (they don’t like “wet feet”, or sitting in water). One note of caution about herbs: mint is a perennial herb which is well known to be very invasive, and will take over the world if you plant it in the ground! It’s best kept in a container for that reason. It took me 4 years to get rid of a patch of mint planted by the former owner of my house! LOL

Throughout the past few years, vitamin D has rightly gained a lot of overdue respect for the various health benefits that is provides to those throughout the world. However, many of us continue to fall short of the adequate intake of this nutrient as a result of many lifestyle choices. Fat Burners- A Great Help or a Waste of Money?

Thermogenics (fat burners), is the name given to a group of compounds that have the effect of speeding up metabolism.

Thermogenesis, as the name suggests, means the production of heat within the body ['thermo': heat, 'genesis': the beginning]. Heat is a by-product of energy production. Therefore, if more fuel is burnt up by the body, more heat is generated.

Some examples of thermogenics include certain foods, herbal extracts and fruit extracts. For example, capsaicin from chillis; caffeine from coffee, tea or guarana; and oxedrine from citrus aurantium.

The most powerful fat burners are supplements that contain combinations of various thermogenic ingredients in concentrated forms.

Fat burners are often used by people wanting to lose weight. They help to create an energy deficit by increasing the body’s overall energy expenditure.

Each day the human body burns energy. The total energy expended comes from three areas: the basal metabolic rate, any exercise performed and the energy used by the body in digesting food. If a fat burner is used it increases the energy expended in the basal metabolic rate and during exercise.

For example, during a day a person may burn 1500 calories (6300 kilojoules). 70% of those calories may come from their basal metabolic rate (1050 calories), 20% may come from their daily exercise (300 calories) and 10% from digestion (150 calories).

If they then take a fat burner, particularly one that contains several powerful ingredients, their daily calorie expenditure may increase to 1800 calories. Of those calories, 71.33% may come from their basal metabolic rate (1284 calories), 20.34% may come from their daily exercise (366 calories) and 8.33% from digestion (150 calories).

By increasing the calorie expenditure each day it becomes much easier to create a calorie deficit and therefore lose weight. So if our person in the example above, consumes 1500 calories from food during the day, without a thermogenic their body fat and weight will remain the same (calories in equals calories out).

However, if they eat (and drink) the same amount of food but also take a fat burner, then they will have a calorie deficit that will need to come from their body’s energy stores, resulting in a loss of body fat and weight.

It is important to note that if their food intake is not controlled or they don’t perform any exercise, then it is highly likely that using a fat burner would not be of benefit in helping them lose body fat or weight; they are not ‘magic pills’. You can’t expect to take a couple of capsules, then go home and eat pizza and drink alcohol and expect to get results.

Thermogenics only work when their use is combined with a good nutrition and exercise program. They simply help you achieve your weight loss goal faster.

Thermogenics are also used by people who simply want an energy boost. If you feel tired during the day or if you want a ‘pick-me-up’ before your exercise session, then thermogenics can certainly help. Thermogenic ingredients stimulate the nervous system helping to boost your energy and increase alertness.

For best results thermogenics should be taken twice a day on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes prior to meals or before exercise and should not be taken after 4:00pm as they may interfere with sleep. Also, it is best to ‘cycle’ their use. This means use them continuously for a maximum of eight weeks and then have at least two weeks off. This prevents the body from becoming desensitised to the ingredients.

There are several very effective thermogenic supplements on the market that can accelerate progress towards your goal. Those containing guarana and green tea extracts along with other powerful herbal extracts like coleus forskohlii and evodiamine are the most effective. They boost your metabolism and promote the use of fat for fuel in your body. It is also best to choose thermogenic supplements in capsule form rather than pill form because the ingredients are more readily absorbed.

They may be used by most people but because they have a powerful effect on metabolism they are not for everyone. In particular, people with high blood pressure or who have heart problems should avoid their use. Also people under the age of 18 or over 65 should avoid them also.

i went to the doctors a week ago. the first thing she said was basically that im fat and that was the main reason i wasn’t having a regular period. well i started eating a fruit salad for breakfast drinking water running on a running Machine for 30 minutes a day and taking some pills; green tea fat burner, total body purifier, fish oil,and colon clear which are all natural pills. and i just wanna know if this unhealthy way to lose weight.if so please give me some tips. im 200 pds and 5′5″ i have a history of diabetes and high blood pressure and i just wanna be healthy.
the fruit salad consist of 2 cups watermelon, a banana a cup of stawberries, a orange and 2 kiwi also i eat that for breakfest and i eat dinner which is most of the time is unhealthy and sometimes a poptart in between if i get real hungry.

Having A Universal Remote Is Helpful

Watching television is one of my favorite past times.  I enjoy sitting on my couch or in my favorite chair and watching a good movie or a good ball game on my HDTV.  So how do I make the experience even better?  How do I make it more convenient to switch between the multitudes of components in my entertainment center?  One minute I am listening to Sirius satellite radio, and then I want to watch a Blu-ray on the Playstation and then check ESPN for the latest Tiger Woods update.  I have to use a minimum of four remote controls to achieve this feat of entertainment bliss.   

There are many problems out there bigger than this but this issue still needs to be dealt with, it’s too much hassle to use four remotes.  So go to your local electronics store and purchase a universal remote, this will make the problem go away.  With this one you can do what you previously had to have four for.

If you lose this universal remote, then you have a small problem.  But you can always go find your other remotes or actually stand up, walk to the component and push some buttons.  Hopefully you find the universal remote and continue your relaxation!

Back to the universal remote idea, there are plenty of different types of remote, from button input versions, to the fanciest touch screen ones that are about the size of a hard cover bestseller.  They can range in price from under a hundred dollars all the way up to and over five hundred dollars.  It really is like buying a new component for your system.   

You may want to start your search online to learn about some of the different types.  What you buy needs to be able to handle the number of remotes you’re combining and the number of components you have.  It’s not necessary to get more remote than you need, it would be a waste of money, just get what is required for your system.

Tips for Buying Upholstered Furniture

Those who look for durability as well as comfort, buy upholstered furniture, preferably made of wood. Why? Because wood is stable and durable and the upholstery on it makes it comfortable too. Definitely no one would like to sit on a wooden sofa that doesn’t have a nice and comfortable seat on it! So whenever you go out to buy a wooden upholstered furniture, follow the tips given here to get the best deal.

• First of all decide certain aspects as how this upholstered furniture will be used in your home, do you have pets and children, do the family often spends time in living room and how often do this furniture is used? This and many other similar question will tell you what type of furniture to look for?
• Check the frame, supporting foundation, and cushioning or padding of the upholstered furniture.
• Choose a solid and sturdy frame. Traditionally the frames made of kiln-dried hardwood are best as they  resists warping. Frames of maple or oak are also good.
• Don’t go for frames made of plywood, particle board, plastic or steel frames as they tend to warp and bend.

• Fabrics such as satins, damasks and brocades, although beautiful, should be chosen only if the furniture has limited use.
• Ensure that cushions fit well, cushion zippers work smoothly and the buttons are secure.
• Check for straight seams and welts and stripes, plaids and patterns matched at the seams and across seating cushions.
• Before taking the final decision, sit on it and feel it. This should be particularly done by the person who’s going to use the sofa or chair most of the time, especially when buying a recliner or “easy” chair. The height and angle of the back and depth of the seat should be suited to the size of the person.
