Save Your Memories – Dry Your Roses

Although there are some things we wish could last forever or a moment we wish would never end, ultimately they do. The memory of the special event, however, can be preserved for us to recall and enjoy for a long time to come. Drying flowers is a simple and inexpensive way to preserve these cherished moments. There are multiple ways to use your flowers and preserve them for crafts and decorations. Whether they were a gift, or from a special day they can be made into something to enjoy long after that time has passed.

Dried flowers can be used for a variety of purposes. For a special event, such as a wedding, some people want to preserve their bouquets. After following drying instructions bouquets can be placed as a wall hanging next to the wedding photo, in a shadow box, or simply placed on a table or in a hutch. After flowers are dried they can also be put back in a vase and set on a table. If a single flower is preserved, perhaps to save on space, it can be laid over the wedding frame on in front of the wedding photo. Individually dried flowers can also be used when making a wreath. Flowers do not have to have special meaning, any flower that dries well can be used to make an arrangement. In addition to adding a variety of leaves, berries, ribbon or other embellishments, dried flowers look beautiful in a wreath. Sometimes less is more, if your wreath is not looking right, try lessening the amount of items in it.

Air drying is by far the easiest and cheapest method of drying flowers including roses. It is simple; all you have to do is follow these simple instructions. Start with perfect and unflawed roses on their stems. If the roses are not in perfect condition, they will wither and the petals will fall off. Remove any leaves that may be on the branches. Bunch them up together in a manner that lets them fan out. Tie the bottom with string or a rubber band. Hang them upside down in a dark, dry place for two to three weeks to be certain that they are completely dry.

The rose drying technique using sand requires a bit more effort, but works good. Cut a rose while it is at its best, and clip the stem so that about 1 inch is left. Be sure the leaves and stem are dry. This means no dew or other water. Put florists wire into the stem and into the head of the flower. Next locate an open deep box and start filling it with white sand till the roses can stand erect in the sand.

Now carefully start putting sand around the base, and over and under all of the petals. The object is to use the sand as a method to keep the shape of the rose. Continue filling the box with sand until every rose is enclosed. Move the sand and rose filled box to a dry place and leave it for 1 to 3 weeks. Be very careful when transferring dried roses, they are very fragile. With caution tilt the box to start emptying the sand. Hold onto all roses as they become free of the sand and keep going till all roses are sand free.

Flowers can also be preserved by being pressed. This method is simple and can be used for things you want to keep forever, or for special cards or invitations. Although you can buy kits to press, they can also be made by having several layers of cardboard stacked with flowers laid out on each sheet and then bound with adjustable straps that you can tighten to ensure a successful drying process. Pressed flowers are very versatile in their uses. When making wedding announcements a pressed flower of the wedding colors is a beautiful addition to the invitations. They can also be used to make cards or baby announcements. Another option for pressed flowers is to place them as a garden scene in an old window or frame. Glue them on a separate piece of glass, not part of the original frame, cut to the same size and then placed and secured to the frame. Any size can be attractive and used any where in a home, from a bathroom to bedroom. The flowers do not have to be the center of the picture, but can also be placed around a photo or poem on the mat. This is a wonderful way to incorporate the flowers to the event, but do it in a small, elegant way.

What kind of test kit do I need for a brackish tank?

The kit I have tests both fresh and salt water. Which results should I use? If I use the freshwater table, my general hardness is off the charts, while the carbonate hardness looks alright. I have a carbonite sand substrate, with volcanic rocks. I am also using Instant Ocean synthetic salt and keep the tank at a specific gravity of 1.005. I would like to periodically move the SG between 1.005 and 1.010 to simulate brackish water changes. Everything else looks good on both tables. How do I make sense of my results?
I have neither a fresh nor salt water tank though. It is brackish. I have never seen a brackish test kit, so which of the two is more appropriate?

when I started with Brack water I used the kits for saltwater….freshwater kits will not read the salt levels.

One train enthusiast might want a model train that runs through a garden outside.  Another train enthusiast might have extensive space for spreading out a large set of train tracks and someone else might have a smaller space but wants to fill it with a couple of different train tracks.  To fulfill all of these different needs, model train makers have made several different sizes of trains.  

The most popular size of the large scale trains is size O.  The scale for O is 1/48th.  Meaning it is one 48th the size of a regular sized train.  The gauge for O is 1 ¼ inches.  Many of these larger sized trains are used outdoors in gardens.  Of course this does not fill the needs of everyone in the train world.

The HO gauge is half the size of the larger O scale.  HO stands for “Half of O”.  The HO scale is 1/87.  HO trains use the standard size track gauge of 16.5mm.  HO scale is a popular size to use in layouts.  They are small enough to be able to use creative scenery with well-designed track plans in a reasonable amount of space.  But they are also large enough to be able to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models.  They are also large enough for children to handle without the risk of small parts or tiny components being damaged.  With the HO scale being able to provide the balance between the detail of larger scales and the lower space requirements of smaller scales, it is a highly sought after railroad line by train hobbyists compared to other scales.

anyone know of a n-scale soccer field, or even n-scale soccer player figures? I can only find them in HO.?

I’m building an n-scale (1:160) model train layout (modern day, fictitious extension of the new haven rr. I’m a huge soccer fan, so want to incorporate a fielding into my layout. I’d love to find a pre-fab kit with goals, benches, players, bleachers, but at the very least need to find some players for the field.

Easiest for a novice webpage designer to use?

I need to complete three linked webpages for a project due next week. I must create an email link, table, etc in this project. Which one would you choose?

Of those options the easiest in my opinion is frontpage – it was really built with the novice in mind and as such is easy to use. Creates poor code however you don’t care about that as that isn’t what the project is about.

Is your Soul on Fire?

People around me are commenting on my high energy level… I feel like I’m on fire lately! It seems that other people want that kind of focus and excitement in their lives too. So my intention is to break “it†down to help them have it.

One of the pieces for me is that I feel like my soul is on fire. In a good way… ïŠ but what does that actually mean? Where there is fire, there is obviously burning, a kind of merging that happens, a consuming of fuel or source energy, a transformational process that changes from one state to another. There is a driving passion, with a mesmerizing quality as flames dance, and a hungry seeking of the next fuel source.

And this is how I find myself living every day… as I seek personal truth, I am pulled forward to my next source (discovery, experience, feeling, etc.) in what becomes a transformational process that I want, and am compelled, to share with the world. Through the last eight years or so, there have been times when I felt like I was on my last glowing ember – only to get stoked again when I touched base with what my soul is here to express.

From my experience, when a person’s soul is on fire, there is nothing that stops you. Taken in the largest possible sense, I suppose that can be good or not-so-good. If you jump out of bed because it’s time to get burning again, you’re on track. However, if you’re not finding that kind of enthusiasm or not getting the results you want, it’s time to check out what’s happening with your source energy – the inner fuel that’s feeding your fire.

3 Things You Can Do

1. Get mesmerized with yourself. Contemplate what’s going on at a deeper level. Go past the obvious (the orange flame), past the hotter heat (the violet flame), into the white-hot center of you. Notice what feeds you, what makes you feel alive, what pulls you forward. If you aren’t feeling the thrill of being you daily, there’s something missing. Go back to the embers to fan them into flames. That is, go back to what has made you happy in the past, maybe distant past, and incorporate more of that into your current reality.

2. Use discernment in choosing your external sources of energy. That is, the best wood burns evenly, without spitting, and gives off good heat. If wood is too new or green or sappy, it won’t burn well. If your environment (people, home, office, thoughts, ideas, business, etc.) isn’t nourishing you to burn at your optimal rate, it’s up to you to figure out which ones are spittin’ and poppin’ (to continue the analogy) and repair or replace them.

3. Explore the expansion. Just like fire grows with good conditions (oxygen, good wood, open space), so can you. When we have a fear or uncertainty about being in wide open space, with no boundaries to hold us back in where we can go and what we can achieve, we are genetically wired to experience insecurity. That used to save our primitive necks… but now, if we learn to embrace that exact same sensation and explore it for the possibilities, we may find new sources of energy to fuel our souls.

When you discover what feeds the fire of your soul, you discover your connection to your higher purpose. And when you know that, you can align everything you do with your soul’s fire… it is my sincere wish for you that you find your personal truth and live it every day.
