AZ Arizona Palm Trees

Killing And Controlling Weeds For “desert Landscaping”?

October 24th, 2009 Walter

I live in Arizona and have “desert landscaping” – that is, no grass just small rocks in my yard. I’m wondering what the best way is to manage the grasses and weeds that come up through the rocks. This happens all year long but more often in the winter (now) and less often in the summer months. I’ve tried some weed killers which have been so-so – I spend a lot of time spraying but not all get killed. Should I just pull them out by hand? :-(
Thanks!!!

  1. Hey jep6363,
Roundup sprayed directly on the leaves or blades of grass will cause the plant to die. Once it enters the ground, it should not hurt any other plants, but use it sparingly.
Preen products are also good. There is a preen sprinkle container, that you sprinkle granules into the area, and it does work.
This combined with low watering and manual weeding is a good approach. Hope it helps.

  2. I also live in Arizona, and weeds are horrible!! And they come in real strong right after it rains. Usually, we’ll spray all over big time right after it rains to prevent them from growing in. Otherwise, it’s best to put on some gloves and pick them. Then make sure you spray all over after you pick them. A lot of times if a piece of the weed you picked gets on the ground, more weeds grow. Just a few ideas! Hope it helps!!

  3. I have the same type of yard and Ihad the same type of problems with weeds and grass. I ended up putting plastic under the dirt, so grass and weeds would not grow. It workd and was totally worth it

  4. I am also in Arizona and have had the same problem. You can certainly pull the weeds by hand, making sure to get the root, but that can be back-breaking after a while.
Weed killers work some of the time. If there is a Home Depot or garden center near you, ask what the best product is in your area.
Also, there are pre-emergents which prevent the weeds from coming up at all. Another solution is to try putting in a weedmat, but this can be time consuming and expensive depending on the size of your yard.
    Good luck!

  5. pour boiling water on them. kills them and is alot better for enviroment, most good chemical weed killers are very expensive
