Are standards so low for men that we consider them to be great fathers…?

…just for doing the same things moms do all day everyday?

I can’t remember the last times someone said, “She’s such a great mom! She has no problem changing diapers and she plays with her children a lot.”

I need to vent!

Now don’t get me wrong, my husband is a wonderful father, but people are always telling me what a great father he is because he “plays with his kids, changes their diapers, etc”.

When I vented this to my friend, she shared with me how over the weekend she was at the lake with family. Here she was on the beach building sandcastles with her two children and watching another family member’s toddler. When the toddler got too close to the water her husband, FROM HIS LAWN CHAIR would call out to her that the baby was getting too close to the water. She related how frustrated she was that the rest of the family commented on what a great guy he was for “watching out for the baby”.

So seriously, have we really set the bar this low?

Essentially, yes.

My wife and I aren’t parents yet, but I was praised for spending the day with our niece, while she was just kind of expected to.

But whatever positive reinforcement encourages men to take their responsibilities seriously, I’m all for it. If it takes a pat on the head and a gold star for reading a story, then pat away.

But the standards for fathers are higher than they used to be during your parents’ generation. Be happy about that at least.
