What to do with a pumpkin plant?
I planted two pumpkin plants in a small area of soil in my garden next to my patio. The plants are very healthy, green and have flowers. The only problem is they have started running onto my patio. This is fine by me, but will the pumpkin plant be ok growing on the patio? Also, they have rooted twice, and I see other roots developing along the vines, do they need soil to root more? This is my first time growing them.
You can train the vines to grow where you want them to grow. The vines help anchor the plant in the ground and allows it to withstand windstorms.
If you cover your vines with soil it’ll help promote secondary root growth, if you leave the soil moist. Covering the vines can also cut down on insect damage.
Keep in mind that you don’t want the secondary roots growing too close to the developing pumpkins because that would prevent the vine from being able to move with the growth of your pumpkins (since the roots anchor the vines to the ground). Also do not allow the pumpkins to grow over the runners because that can choke off their access to nutrients, etc.
Eventually you’ll need to prune the vines to encourage the plant to devote it’s energies towards fruit growth.
