AZ Arizona Palm Trees

Pineapple Palm/ Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis)?

November 7th, 2009 Walter

This large specimen growing in SW Florida is covered with ferns growing on the trunk. Are the ferns damaging the palm? Should they be removed?

  1. The ferns do not damage the palm, they are just along for the ride, living in the rotted boots (leaf bases) of the palm. Watch as you drive around SW Florida (I live in the same area) you will see that it is a fairly common site, particularly on older palms. If they seem unsightly to you, you can remove them.
