Einstein’s Special Relativity Question?
So Two Things:
1) Since we are moving from orbits around the sun, and our solar system around the galaxy, and so on, along with gravity acting on us, why do we not experience time dilation and space contraction? Is there something I’m missing about relativity in general?
2) I saw a video that said If an alien at one end of the universe was biking away from a man sitting still on a park bench on earth, that everything behind the alien (what he’s biking away from) would essentially be in the past, and what he was biking toward was essentially in the future… I thought that time dilation from motion means that everything would be in the future if time slows down for the object on motion….
1) First off, the observer in a reference frame never experiences time dilation in his OWN frame. Time dilation is only observed from another frame. Second, time dilation does occur for us, but the effects are minimal at the speeds at which we travel. For example: let’s use the Earth’s center as the “rest” frame, and look at a person at the equator as the “moving frame”. That person moves about 1 mile/second. The time dilation effect of that speed would make one second dilate to 1 + 4*10^-11 seconds. An practically unobservable difference. Make it 10000 miles/second, and it’s 1.004 seconds. Noticeable, but 10000 miles/second is pretty darn fast.
[And for those who are saying that special relativity doesn't apply because the person on the equator is being accelerated, and is therefore not in an inertial reference frame, let's just say that this is close enough for this work.]
2) This really doesn’t have anything to do with special relativity. If you’re riding a bike, where you were is in the past, and where you’re going to be is in the future. Where you are RIGHT NOW is the present. Time dilation means if the alien has a clock, the rest observer sees that clock as running more slowly, but the alien still has past and future – time dilation doesn’t stop time, or turn it backwards, or whatever “everything would be in the future if time slows down for the object on motion” is supposed to mean.
